This is not a Confrontational Poem
By James Weldon Jenkins Jr
i wish to celebrate the diversity
of this nation’s history
i want to capture the greatness
ingenuity & savagery
without being negative cause
this poem is not confrontational
i want to write about the
middle passage
the trail of tears
without being polemically challenged
perhaps i can speak of the cotton gin?
or how amos & andy danced
their way into the warm
coal stoves of american hearts
a picnic and evening at the movies
watching birth of a nation
emitt till hanging & smiling
cause anything else would be confrontational
I really want to yell
die monsters….die!
but that would
be…
