FOR SUPER SISTERS:
SHECARRI, SIMONE B, SIMONE M AND SERENA

By Jolynn Brooks

When the reflection mirrors a self unbecoming
The echoes heard trumpet voices unworthy of repeating
No utterance can erase a vacuum even nature abhors

When muscled bodies are ridiculed born of dedicated discipline
Locks limbs fingernails noses and toes
Adorned with messages of caring and love
All eyes are not embracing

When what you see threatens who you are
What you are is the threat to who you can become
Displaced persons adopt prisons as homes even after their release

Beauty is who we are
Beauty is what we do
Beauty is how we live

Let us be
Let us know
Let us love
Ourselves.
