Counter Point
By Darlene Roy
Her oeuvre is so phat, word-warrin’
riffs rage off Sonia’s fervent tongue in
hisses, murmurs, clicks, shrills. Droppin’ peace rockets
into strife monger’s ears, she slashes bigotry
chords, debases money chasing Wall Street. Afro-
griot compels dissent against US and hostile
nations' frantic jigs around oily war poles.
Dedicated to Sonia Sanchez upon her selection as the
first Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on
December 29, 2011
by Mayor Michael Nutter.
Behind the Veneer
Awful and awe-some phrases deftly decode
our lives’ links or limits through the
cryptic pen of this noted time shifter,
spirits diviner and memory bender. When the
once dead thrives, as a specter or
name -- and magic veils reality, then pushes
us beyond belief – we enter Toni’s tome.
For Nobel Laureate, Toni Morrison,
who transitioned on April 5, 2019.
