MERGE LITERARY MAGAZINE
THE CANDIDATE

By Hzal Anubewei

I
am announcing my candidacy for the office of
servant of the spirt
I am running for the seat of the soul
I want a seat at the same table as
Malcolm X a changed man
Martin Luther King doing god’s will
Nelson Mandela in jail for what he believed
Sojourner Truth out of the sight of blind men
trains running underground
Marcus Garvey sailing home to Abukan
Noble Drew Ali standing on a square perpendicular to the laws of man
Frederick Douglas black and slave on the 4th of July
Denmark Vessey all men are born free
Rosa Parks sitting down to stand up
I will be heard
These are soljahs with a black light shining in the
darkness of neglect
the faces and the cries of the children
singing from graveyards
broken necks and bodies shot
said they did nothing wrong
the living dynasties minds leaking with fear
I’m running on a platform of justice
I’m not looking for a solution
I’m not preparing to make a negotiation
There is no deal on the table
Listen to the people of Abukan
I am somebody
I am free
I got my own god
I got my own family
I got my own land
The time has passed for any man
to try to control me
I’m not a stranger to myself
The platform I’m running on is
self-resurrection
I’m running on a platform of excellence
I’m running on a platform of beauty inside and out
This is my exodus away from madness and lies
I'm running on a platform of harmony
I listen while my children sing
stand at the foot of skyscrapers
we build
walk the streets of our downtown
invitations from the hood the hottest ticket in town
I’m running on a platform of loving ourselves
I’m running on a platform of taking care of home
I need you to go the polls
as write in candidates all and vote
We are the candidate we been looking for
Stand up and be free
A vote for us for the office
the candidate
of the soul of Abukan
