Saturdays
By Azariah Grant
The day of the week for all things Black.
Our TV blasts BET classics that I’d watched
A couple of times before–
Hustle & Flow, Purple Rain, The Wiz
Those are just a few
Mama cooked dinner and it’d be ready by 2,
Collard greens, mac & cheese, chicken, and cornbread
The typical soul food meal
She’d sip her fancy chardonnay,
And I’d drink my fruit punch
Back when we had the beige sectional
My spot was my spot
I made sure it was known
Grabbed my twin-sized comforter
To get ready for Love Jones
Of course, we can’t forget the snacks;
Hot Fries and Little Debbie treats
From a trip to the Hostess Factory
Those were our go-to’s
As we’d watch Mo’ Better Blues
Spike Lee joints stayed lit in our house
One of my favorites remains School Daze
Times like these when life was simple
Are the ones I cherish most,
Things are different now, but
I’ll always remember my childhood “Roots”.
