Roseland Taxi Dancer
By Josè Angel Figueroa
I am unknown in a maddening
Crowd in Roseland where
Loneliness is the most
Popular stranger wearing
The true face of a lie
I dance with you when
No one can get in your
Head when you are
Out of reach
Out of town
Out of sight
Out of mind
I have embraced those
Whose quest for perfection
Got lost in a snowstorm
Before the blink of an eye
I listen to the woes of those
Who squandered cherished
Kisses with ingratiated
Flattery and hype
You can’t get everything
By giving nothing but
I will love you only
When we dance
The musicians were
Tripping in their own
Groove as if raindrops
Of passion came from
The cosmos of jazz
I snapped out of this
Barfly’s pizzazz when
My lover beckons and
Was no longer at war
With myself.
How profound to be
Without sound when
Someone with wit
Knows your worth
Was it that fire that
She blessed me with
Her warm desires
Whispering, “Return
Home, where your
Sea legs belong.”
And I, a seagull, old
As stale bread, smiled
Like a lovable pirate.
