Ode to My Inner Child
By Shalena Dupree
A young girl raised by troubled parents with troubled pasts
Searching and yearning for a love that would last
Mama always at work and daddy high as a kite
Relying on her older sisters to teach her wrong from right
An early developing body attracting unwanted attention
Feeling emotions inside her she’s too scared to mention
She just wants a hug, but no one’s ever home
Isolates herself cause being alone is all she’s ever known
Her love languages are words of affirmation and quality time
Because instead of just saying “I love you”, her parents chose to spend a dime
She longed for a normal life like the other kids had
Wondering that maybe if she did she wouldn’t be as sad
Needless to say this little girl was failed
By generations of family members who loved to raise hell
Bottled up feelings clawing to get off her chest
That little girl is now an adult simply trying her best
