LET’S CELEBRATE
By Christian Myrick
Although some of our lives may seem rickety, let’s celebrate our attained victories,
—Breath still permeates our bodies,
Our melanin still cures diseases like a million hot toddies,
And chasing success remains the number one hobby.
—Let’s celebrate for our oppressors have failed,
Let’s celebrate for we defend ourselves against the lobbies who design our wreckage,
Let’s celebrate for we surpass the limits of the cell they funnel us in,
Let’s celebrate refining our skills, increasing our value, and sliding out greased, polished, and untouchable
So let’s celebrate.
Let’s celebrate for our consciousness has increased,
Let’s celebrate for our murders continue to cease,
Let’s celebrate for many us can now render and sign a lease,
Let’s celebrate for a lot of us can now regularly enjoy a Ritz-Carlton quiche,
Let’s celebrate for the iron of healing has straightened the wrinkles of our damaged self-esteem into a crease.
Let’s celebrate for the teachers who taught us how to be proper speakers,
Let’s celebrate for the preachers who pray and pray, serving as our keepers,
Let’s celebrate for our fathers, who guided us through boyhood, and analyzed us through manhood,
Let’s celebrate for our mothers, who injected love within us every day with her kisses to counter the hateful atmospheres we entered,
Let’s celebrate Black men— because our very existence causes every heart to experience a feast.
