FOOTSTEPS
By Hzal Anubewei
My
Father called me
Here is my land now it is yours
this knife of my grandfather
a symbol of protection and courage
This ring represents family love
I have given you words of wisdom all of your
life
This
pen tells the stories of what it means to be
alive
Lastly
I have brought you a fine leather cloth
and
imported silk.
Smiling he said
none of this material could be made to fit my
feet’
This leather and this silk are yours alone
Take them and design a pair of your own
Like I did when my father gave me
a fine leather cloth and imported silk.
Each of us makes steps of our own.
each branch of every tree grows out to
receive
its light of the sun
and
makes its own limbs with leaves of its formula
