BROKE WAKE
By Tony Medina
Although I’ve never had
A near death experience
I’m always near death
Especially during the
Colder months
Where I seek refuge
In funeral parlors
Or churches paying
My last respects
To some poor stranger
Locked away in a box
To a final resting place
I should be so lucky
I always envy those
Corpses all dressed
Up and made up
Like movie stars with
Eyeliner and makeup
Laid out in a warm
Cushy box with all the
Pomp and circumstance
All I could do is sit there
And watch as people moan
Mourn and fret crying
Over them and pray
The pallbearers
Can’t lift the poor
Schlub so I could
Stay in from the cold
A little while longer
Hell, I’m as good as
Dead, nobody makes
A fuss over me
